The Canadian Union of Independent Student Organizations

About Us

CUISO is a co-operative union of independent student organizations from universities and colleges across Canada. Independent student organizations are student-led, based out of or around post-secondary educational institutions, and provide valuable services to students and often the broader community. Independent student organizations are different from most ‘student clubs’, in that they are generally larger and more enduring organizations, typically funded by student fee levies. Independent student organizations include a wide array of purposes:

  • Accessibility Centres

  • Aid, Development and Refugee Organizations (e.g. Engineers Without Borders, WUSC)

  • Art organizations (e.g. theatre groups, film festivals/societies)

  • Campus Bike Shops

  • Campus/Community gardens

  • Childcare Centres

  • Environmental organizations

  • Food organizations (e.g. cafes, farmers’ markets, free food initiatives)

  • Legal Aid Clinics

  • LGBTQ+ Centres

  • Media organizations (e.g. campus newspapers, campus radio stations, journals/magazines)

  • Outdoors clubs

  • PIRGs (Public Interest Research Groups)

  • Racialized Student Centres

  • Student housing initiatives

  • Women and Trans Centres
